WHAT IS A PUG CORGI MIX BREED?
The Porgi looks like a perfect mix of a Pug and a Corgi. They have a longer muzzle with velvety ears that flop over. Most Porgis take more traits from their Corgi parentage, having a squat build and a longer snout. Porgi puppies are also super cute and have a great smile that will melt your heart. Unfortunately due to the similarities between the parent breeds, Porgis are susceptible to a few medical condition. One positive is that the longer snout lets a Porgi breath easier. These mix-breed dogs can also be incredibly stubborn, so expect obedience training and potty training to take longer than usual.

PORGI HISTORY
The Porgi is a designer breed of dog of half Pug and half Corgi. This means that someone took a pure breed Pug and pure breed Corgi and tried combining them! We don’t know who bred the first Pug Corgi mix, but they became available in early 2000 as a designer crossover mix. Both the Pug and Corgi are similar in size and both are super fluffy, so it makes sense that someone would try combining them.
There are two different types of Corgi that can be mixed with a pug. The Pembroke Corgi and Cardigan Corgi which are two different breeds. The difference between a Pembroke and a Cardigan Corgi are the Pembroke has a shorter body with pointy ears and the cardigan’s ears are more rounded. The Cardigan welsh Corgi is the ancestor of the modern day Corgi. These were dogs of Celtic warrior tribes in ancient Wales and their lineage can be traced to over 3000 years old. Meanwhile, across the world, the first Pugs were being bred by monks in ancient china to be lap dogs to the royalty! Five thousand years later, these two ancient breeds finally got together!
PORGI - HALF PUG HALF CORGI LOOKS!
What does a Corgi Pug mix look like? The Porgi has a longer snout and big expressive eyes. On average Porgi’s stand 12 inches tall, weigh around 22 pounds, and live around 13 years. They take clownish characteristics from both their Pug and Corgi with soft ears that either flop over or stand up and round brown eyes. The average Porgi looks a bit more like a Corgi than a Pug. Porgi’s have short to medium length fur and are known for their extreme shedding. Their coats can be either Black, Fawn, Sable, or Red.
PORGI EARS: Some Porgi ears will stand straight up! These dogs inherit their ears from their Corgi side of the family. Porgi puppies are sometimes born with their ears standing up, if not they might be standing by at least 8 weeks old. This is because your Porgi puppy is done teething and has gotten enough calcium to build strong upright ear cartilage. If you want your Porgi ears to stand up, you can look into taping them.

PORGI COST
The Porgi is a great family dog and kids love playing with little Porgi puppies. They are sturdy and alert dogs, but will need a lot more training to get them potty trained. But how much does a Porgi cost? The cost of buying a Porgi Puppy will be pretty high because there aren’t a lot of them on the market. The Porgi does however make a great dog for people on a budget because they dont eat very much and are a little healthier than your average pug, reducing medical costs.
How much is a Porgi puppy? A Pug Corgi puppy will cost up to $750 - $2500. Frankly though it’s unlikely that you will find one for $750 and if you do make sure to investigate the breeder! There aren’t many people breeding this mix so you will want to do your research.
Food Cost: The average Porgi will eat about .5-1 cup of food per day, that about 15-40$ worth of food per month depending on what dog food you buy. This Pug Corgi mix eats about $1 worth of food a day.
Medical Expenses for a Porgi can average $300-500 per year.
Insurance: We recommend every dog have health insurance. This can cost around $50 a month. Surgeries and accidents can cost you big money, upwards of $1000 to $5000 dollars for a minor surgery. If you find you can not afford pet health insurance, please try to get your Porgi puppy insured for the first year or two. That is when they are the most curious. Porgi’s are energetic dogs and love to chew on anything they can get a hold of. After they are a year old, the puppies make better decisions and are slightly less likely to swallow something they shouldn’t. We recommend TruPanion, because they are easy to communicate with.
Average Non-Annual Pug Corgi puppy cost - Your yearly cost for extras should be pretty low. Get a good brush to control your Porgi’s shedding and a nice harness because they will require lots of walks. If you require a groomer for baths or a dog walker, expect your average running costs to go way up. These services may run in excess of $1000 a year depending on how often you use them. In addition plan it is a good idea to budget a few hundred dollars in the first year on obedience training school for your Porgi. It will be worth the expense!

BUY A PORGI PUPPY - QUICK TIPS
Don’t use a pet store - Any Porgi puppies you find will often come from a puppy mill with horrible conditions.
Consider Adoption - think about finding an older Porgi puppy from sites like https://theshelterpetproject.org/
Puppy Mills often pose as Pug mix breeders! Please visit the breeder and poke around first!
Find a responsible breeder. A good Porgi breeder will have a spacious clean home. They should be transparent and open. Good Porgi Mix breeders will want to meet you in person. They will also specialize in only one or two mix breeds. FaceTime is usually a good way to check the Porgi puppies living conditions if they are far away. They should be happy to share with you any information you ask, provide vet/vaccine documentation, and should recommend that you get insurance. They will not always have puppies available, this isn’t a factory!
PORGI LIFE EXPECTANCY
Your average Pug has a similar life expectancy to the Corgi. Both will live on average around 10-15 years, with Pugs living a tad bit older. So you can expect the Porgi to also live around 10-15 years old. This is a new breed so there isn’t a lot of scientific data out there. Though both parent breeds are small dogs with typically higher lifespans, they can also have lots of medical problems due to their size. Many Porgi’s have eye problems and suffer from hypothyroidism. However with proper vet care, your Porgi will live for a long long time!
PORGI AGGRESSION
Are Porgis Agressive? The short answer is no. Porgis are much less likely to be aggressive than other dogs. However these dogs have a lot of energy, so if not properly obedience trained the Porgi can become slightly more problematic in the home. Your Porgi might enjoy destroy things or getting into places they shouldn’t so it’s a good idea to keep your Pug Corgi mix busy with lots of toys and training activities.
PORGI TRAINING
The Porgi is probably not a good fit for a first time dog owner. Though their energy levels are good they shed an insane amount. Your Porgi is part working do which means they have a lot of energy that needs to be directed. Also your Porgi might be very stubborn and will require a lot of extra work to get them potty trained.
In general, we recommend you use only positive reinforcement in training your dog. Use tons of treats and praise them whenever they do something you want them to.
To properly train your Pug Corgi mix we recommend you also take them to obedience school. This will both allow your Porgi to learn how to follow commands, be social around other dogs, pay attention while distracted. Obedience school also has the benefit of helping teach you, the owner, new tricks for training your puppy.
The Porgi needs about an hour of exercise every day. Though the Pug is a lazy couch potato, the Corgi parents need a bit more exercise, at least an hour per day. That makes this a good dog for families living in the city or smaller apartments.
PRO TIP: Get your Porgi a nice harness. NEVER WALK A PORGI WITH A COLLAR, it could collapse their trachea and injure them badly. THIS IS OUR FAVORITE HALTER.
QUICK PORGI TRAINING TIPS:
Send your Porgi to Obedience School early.
Crate Train your Porgi as a puppy.
Spend 10 minutes everyday training.

CORGI HEALTH
Corgi’s are small well built dogs that have been bred for working. They most commonly suffer from problems of eyes, hips, thyroid, and tooth decay.
Hip Displasia: When the hip ball becomes dislocated.
Minor Eye Problems like cataracts, retinal dysplasia, or corneal dystrophy
Hypothyroidism - when your thyroid can’t make enough hormones. Symptoms are fatigue, sensitivity, weight gain, constipation.
Dental Decay - Brush those teeth so they don’t become rotten or infected.
The Pug (A.K.A The Potato of Dogs)
Pugs are the cutest, and at PugCity we live and breathe these cuties! They are the most snuggly of dogs and your average pug is 30% dog, 30% clown, 40% potato.
Pugs a toy breed, often 10-13 inches high and weighing from 14 to 20 pounds. They have an average life span of 13 to 15 years with short smooth hair. The most usual pug colors are fawn and black (the black pug usually sheds less than the white). They are sweet-natured and adaptable, but also extremely stubborn at times. Any pug owner who has tried to get their little guy to poop while its raining knows what Im talking about. Pugs are flat nosed with big round eyes that give them pretty human like expressions. The pug used to be a royal dog and is one of the most popular dogs today.
PUG QUICK FACTS
Toy breed,
Size: 10-13 high
Weight 14-20 pounds
Life Expectancy - 13 - 15 years
Short Shedding Hair (Fawn pugs shed more than black pugs)
Pugs can be difficult to potty train, but once you have bonded with your pug, you will definitely forgive them. They also have this quirky head tilt when they are interested in something. Pugs will roll their head from side to side as if testing their ears to make sure they heard you right!
PUG HEALTH ISSUES:
Brachycephalic Syndrom: They are part of the brachycephalic family of dogs with short smushed in faces. This means the pug’s air flow into their nose isn’t what it should be and they can have trouble breathing. So take care with your pug on hot days and especially if flying with them. Pugs also have big bulging eyes that can get injured quite easily.
Mitral Valve disease is another thing to look out for, its a type of heart disease common in smaller dogs, and symptoms include loss of energy and coughing.
Tracheal Collapse: please make sure they are wearing a harness and not a dog collar! We love this medium-size Puppia Harness. It fits perfect for most pugs.
Skin Issues: They are prone to mites and yeast infections in their folds and their ears. We use this ear cleaner on Momo occasionally and it seems to help! *Note: if you see anything unusual about your pug’s ears or skin, please visit your vet!
Hip Problems: Pugs also can develop bad hips from years of jumping up and down on couches. This is called hip dysplasia and can be managed by keeping their weight down.
Good news! Many of these negative pug health traits can be mitigated by mixing the pug with another dog like a yorkie!

CONCLUSION
This Porgi mix is a super cute combination of a Pug and Welsh Corgi and takes some of the best traits from its Pug and Corgi parents. They are snuggly yet energetic and alert dogs who love to work or lie around on the couch. Since both parents have different health issues, your chances of health concerns are relatively low. This isn’t the best choice for a first time dog family because the Porgi sheds a lot and will be slightly harder to train. However this is an amazing dog for a family living in the city or in smaller apartments.
