What do you get when you mix a Pug and a Pitbull? A PugPit!

PugPit QUICK FACTS:
The PugPit is actually way more common than you would think. This combination of a bigger and smaller breed dog may seem awkward at first, but the Pug Pit makes for an amazing companion! Also known as the Pitpug or the PugBull, these dogs can weigh anywhere between 20-50 pounds and be 14-20 inches tall. The average Pit-Pug looks more like a Pitbull than a Pug, and they have short fur that sheds less than a pug. Their coat can be either Blue/Tan/Black/Brown, with Brown/Tan being the most common combination. The Pug Pit is an extremely fun and playful dog. They are very smart and make for a great family dog, though if not given obedience training, they can become aggressive towards strangers and protective of their family.

WHAT IS A PUG PITBULL MIX BREED?

Pug Pits are a dog’s dog. They are much larger than their Pug parents and therefor rather mild-mannered. The Pug Pit has a lot of traits of the Pitbull. To be honest, in most PugPits we can’t really see a lot of Pug, unlike the Chug or Pomapug. However, the dominant pitbull genes do make the Pug Pit a very eager to please and easy to train dog. When you cross a pug and pitbull you get a particularly single-minded canine, so if they decide to chase a squirrel, you better have a leash on this pug pitbull mix!

. The Pug Pit is a designer breed of dog, which means that someone took two pure breed dogs and tried combining them! Though the Pug is a pure breed, the average pitbull is usually a little more mixed. The pure breed version of a Pitbull is the American Pitbull Terrier. So when you see PugPits on Instagram it’s usually pretty hard to tell what the actual mix is. The history of the Pug Pit doesn’t go back very far. We don’t know who bred the first Pug Pitbull mix, but they became widely available in early 2000 as a designer crossover mix. The Pug Pit will be extremely devoted to their owners, however, they can also be possessive and protective due to their Pitbull parents so it’s very important to train your Pug Pit early on. This crossbreed is also much more energetic than your average pug, thanks to the working dog traits of the Pitbull parent. The Pug Pit is an ideal companion for families even those with small children. They also make the cutest Pug Pit puppies and when they get older are extremely laid back. Finally, the Pug Pit has fewer health issues than your average pug because of it’s mixing. They have a slightly lower lifespan (due to their size) but you can expect less breathing trouble than your average Pug.

A few cute PugPit names we have come across in the past!
Molly, Bruiser, Beef, Burger, Izzy, Lucy, Maud, Doug, Edna, Hank, and Elvis.

ARE PUG PIT MIX AGGRESSIVE?

The short answer is no. PugPits are no more aggressive than any other dog. There is a stereotype that their Pitbull parent is an aggressive dog. This is because they are extremely well-muscled athletic dogs. They are also extremely single-minded, so if they want to chase something down, they are going to chase it down! However, they are extremely kind and easy to train dogs too. We recommend all dogs have a little obedience training, so with a little help, the PugPit can actually become one of the most family-friendly mix-breeds out there and have no aggression problems what so ever!

HOW TO TRAIN A PUGPIT

The PugPit might not be the best fit for a first-time dog owner. They have a large amount of energy which means that they will require a good amount of training. There is also a chance that your half Pug half Pitbull might take on some of the stubborn qualities of the Pug.

In general, we recommend you use only positive reinforcement in training your dog. Use tons of treats and praise them whenever they do something you want them to.

To properly train your Pug Pitbull mix we recommend you also take them to obedience school. This will both allow your Hug to learn how to follow commands, be social around other dogs, pay attention while distracted. Obedience school also has the benefit of helping teach you, the owner, new tricks for training your puppy.

The PugPit needs a lot of exercise every day. Though the Pug is a lazy couch potato, the Pitbull parents need up to 2 hours of exercise per day. That makes this a great dog for families who like taking walks and outdoor activities.

PRO TIP: Get your Hug a nice no pull front leading harness and it will be much easier to walk! THIS IS OUR FAVORITE HALTER.

QUICK PUGPIT TRAINING TIPS:

  1. Send your Pug Pitbull Mix to Obedience School early.

  2. Crate Train your PugPit as a puppy.

  3. Spend 10 minutes everyday training.

  4. Work on the basics first: Sit, Stay, Come.

PUG-PIT COST

The PugPit is a great family dog and kids love playing with PugPit puppies. However, you also need to make sure to train this dog early on. The cost of buying a PugPit won’t be as high as most pure breed pugs or some other designer pug mixes and luckily vet visits / medical expenses might be lower due to the healthy pitbull mix.

How much is a PugPit puppy? A Pug Pitbull Mix puppy will cost up to $500 - $1400. The lower demand for pitbulls in America reduces the price of a PugPit puppy by a little bit. Keep your eyes open for PugPit adoptions too, because many families will get one and not train them, then wonder why their new PugPit mix is being overly protective and aggressive towards strangers.

Food Cost: The average PugPit will eat about 1.5-2 cups of food per day, that about 40-60$ worth of food per month depending on what dog food you buy. This Pug Pitbull mix eats about $2 worth of food a day. That’s a little more than it’s smaller breed mix friends but still affordable!

Medical Expenses for a PugPit can average $400-600 per year.

Insurance: We recommend every dog has health insurance. This can cost around $50 a month. Surgeries and accidents can cost you big money, upwards of $1000 to $5000 dollars for minor surgery. If you find you can not afford pet health insurance, please try to get your PugPit puppy insured for the first year or two. That is when they are the most curious. After PugPits is a year old, the puppies make better decisions and are slightly less likely to swallow something they shouldn’t. We recommend TruPanion, because they are easy to communicate with.

Average Non Annual Pug Pit puppy cost - Maybe as high as $600. Though you probably don't need to send your PugPit to the groomer, you should budget to send them to puppy school. This can be a little pricey but you will save a lot of headaches with some early obedience training!

THE PITBULL

Your average pitbull is an extremely intelligent and energetic dog. Because they are extremely agile and powerful they have gotten a bad rap for being overly aggressive. This is untrue and when properly loved and obedience trained, the Pitbull makes for an amazing pet. They are single-minded animals and whatever they set out to do, they will accomplish!

The Pug (A.K.A The Potato of Dogs)

Pugs are the cutest, and at PugCity we live and breathe these cuties! They are the most snuggly of dogs and your average pug is 30% dog, 30% clown, 40% potato.

Pugs a toy breed, often 10-13 inches high, and weighing from 14 to 20 pounds. They have an average life span of 13 to 15 years with short smooth hair. The most usual pug colors are fawn and black (the black pug usually sheds less than the white). They are sweet-natured and adaptable, but also extremely stubborn at times. Any pug owner who has tried to get their little guy to poop while its raining knows what I’m talking about. Pugs are flat-nosed with big round eyes that give them pretty human-like expressions. The pug used to be a royal dog and is one of the most popular dogs today.

  • Size: 10-13 high

  • Weight 14-20 pounds

  • Life Expectancy - 13 - 15 years

  • Short Shedding Hair (Fawn pugs shed more than black pugs)

Pugs can be difficult to potty train, but once you have bonded with your pug, you will definitely forgive them. They also have this quirky head tilt when they are interested in something. Pugs will roll their head from side to side as if testing their ears to make sure they heard you right!

PUG HEALTH ISSUES:

Brachycephalic Syndrom: They are part of the brachycephalic family of dogs with short smushed in faces. This means the pug’s airflow into their nose isn’t what it should be and they can have trouble breathing. So take care of your pug on hot days and especially if flying with them. Pugs also have big bulging eyes that can get injured quite easily.

Mitral Valve disease is another thing to look out for, its a type of heart disease common in smaller dogs, and symptoms include loss of energy and coughing.

Tracheal Collapse: please make sure they are wearing a harness and not a dog collar! We love this medium-size Puppia Harness. It fits perfect for most pugs.

Skin Issues: They are prone to mites and yeast infections in their folds and their ears. We use this ear cleaner on Momo occasionally and it seems to help! *Note: if you see anything unusual about your pug’s ears or skin, please visit your vet!

Hip Problems: Pugs also can develop bad hips from years of jumping up and down on couches. This is called hip dysplasia and can be managed by keeping their weight down.

Good news! Many of these negative pug health traits can be mitigated by mixing the pug with another dog like a Pitbull!
